Install VPN before going to China if you still need Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, or similar apps. Mainland networks typically block those services and often block VPN download sites too. Do I need a VPN in China?
Need is a practical question, not a legal one. If your trip only uses WeChat, Alipay, Baidu Maps and mainland hotel booking apps, many visitors never open a consumer VPN. If your work or family still lives on Gmail, Google Meet, WhatsApp or Instagram, those services are typically unreachable on ordinary mainland routes. That does not mean an unauthorised consumer VPN is lawful. Chinese rules distinguish authorised enterprise connectivity from unauthorised tunnels. Why 'I'll do it at the airport' fails
International terminals sometimes still reach Google. After you connect to mainland hotel Wi-Fi, a Chinese SIM, or many airport networks beyond the gate, the Great Firewall applies. DexterVPN's website, app-store listings, and Google Play can all be unreachable at the moment you first need them.
A second failure mode is the app itself. Gmail, Instagram, and Telegram are often missing from mainland stores. A working tunnel cannot install software that was never on the phone.

- If FaceTime or another Apple app is involved, confirm the Mac — not an unsupported iPhone — is the device running DexterVPN
What a VPN is not
- Not a licence. Mainland rules around unlicensed VPNs can change. Read current local law; DexterVPN does not advise you to break it
- Not a shutdown bypass. If the network path is gone, the tunnel is gone
- Not anonymity. Hotel front desks, payment cards, and logged-in Google accounts still identify you
- Not a Google Maps replacement for mainland addresses
After you land
- Join Wi-Fi or enable roaming so you have some internet

- Hong Kong is a useful setup window because the firewall is different. Install and sign in there if you did not do it at home. The mainland path still needs the app already on the device.
- Is VPN use universally lawful in China?
