The Great Firewall filters traffic at mainland international gateways using DNS interference, IP blocking, and inspection of encrypted tunnels. That is a standing technical control, not a weekend outage.

The same app can behave differently in Hong Kong, Macau, or on a foreign roaming path that never enters the mainland gateway. This page is about mainland access unless a section says otherwise.

We do not list a service as government-blocked merely because it is unpopular, slow, or missing from a Chinese app store. Commercial unavailability and a network block are different facts.

Android

1. Download DexterVPN from the official DexterVPN apps page, not a third-party APK site
2. Sign in, grant the VPN permission prompt, and connect before opening the target app
3. If the tunnel drops, disable aggressive battery optimization for DexterVPN and retry

Windows

1. Install the signed Windows app from dextervpn.app
2. Connect with WireGuard first; switch to OpenVPN TCP if the hotel or office network blocks UDP
3. Only then open the desktop or web version of the target app

macOS

1. Install the macOS app and approve the VPN configuration in System Settings if prompted
2. Connect before launching the app or browser session
3. If FaceTime or another Apple app is involved, confirm the Mac — not an unsupported iPhone — is the device running DexterVPN

Before you travel or change networks

• Download DexterVPN before departure — provider websites are often blocked on mainland Wi-Fi
• Carry 2FA backup codes offline; SMS to a foreign number can fail
• Screenshot hotel, train, and emergency contacts in case maps fail
• Do not wait until Beijing or Shanghai airport Wi-Fi to create a VPN account

Troubleshooting

• If nothing loads, confirm you actually have any internet — a VPN cannot create a path from zero connectivity
• Switch protocol from WireGuard to OpenVPN if the first tunnel dies quickly
• Test Android mobile data and hotel Wi-Fi separately; campus networks add their own filters
• Open a non-Google site first to see whether the tunnel is up

Limitations

• DexterVPN has not published a live, per-app test log for every title in this table
• Hotel captive portals, company proxies, and university networks can still interrupt a working tunnel
• Hong Kong coverage on the DexterVPN server list does not mean a mainland hotel network is identical to Hong Kong

TikTok, Douyin, and why this hub has no thin TikTok clone

International TikTok and Chinese Douyin are separate products with separate stores, accounts, and content catalogues. A VPN does not convert one into the other. Device region, SIM, payment method, and app-store account can still block installs even if a website loads. We are not publishing a TikTok-in-China how-to that pretends otherwise.
